MASVINGO – The First Lady Amai Auxillia Mnangagwa has called for the scrapping of cancer treatment charges in the country.
She made the remarks while addressing multitudes of people in Masvingo who turned up to take advantage of the free cervical and breast screening programme she initiated.
The free cervical and breast cancer screening programme initiated by the First Lady has unearthed numerous challenges faced by cancer patients.
It is against this background that the Amai Mnangagwa called on government to consider scrapping off cancer treatment charges or review of the charges to save lives.
The Ministry of Health and Child Care represented by the Director of Family Health in the ministry, Dr Bernard Madzima, said they are now working on a long term solution to deal with cancer.
Since the launch of the programme in Bulawayo more than 500 people who have been diagnosed with various cancer ailments are already receiving treatment.
Over 9 000 people have been screened to date.
The First Lady seeks to reach out to all marginalised communities to ensure access to cancer screening services are afforded to every Zimbabwean in the fight against the deadly disease. – ZBC
