President Emmerson Mnangagwa has revealed that he will set up a leaner cabinet to remove functional duplications and contain unnecessary expenditures so as to enhance productivity and efficient service delivery.

Cde Mnangagwa said this while addressing Permanent Secretaries of government ministries at the Munhumutapa boardroom today during a meeting meant for him to familiarise with key players in the government machinery and provide general direction for his administration.

The President however assured the Permanent Secretaries that the merging of ministries will not result in retrenchment of workers.

“I want to assure you that no one will be laid off, except those who have reached retirement age. Those whose Ministerial posts will be abolished will be re-skilled and reassigned to other areas in the Public Service,” he said.

Cde Mnangagwa added that the rebuilding of the national economy and improvement of the livelihoods of all Zimbabweans is both urgent and imperative.

“Our people have endured economic hardships for over two decades, and now expect this new government to turn things around, within the shortest time possible. Let us take advantage of the positive optimism among our people, ushered in by this current dispensation, and do our best,” said Cde Mnangagwa.

He also warned that the time of laissez faire approach to work is over, as the new government’s prime focus is the implementation of practical solutions to grow the national economy, create jobs and boost the incomes of the people.

“My government will have no tolerance for bureaucratic slothfulness, which is quick to brandish procedures as an excuse for stalling service delivery to citizens, investors and other stakeholders. Our mantra should be peak performance, peak performance and peak performance,” the President also warned.

Cde Mnangagwa implored Heads of Ministries to play their ‘supremely critical role’ to turnaround the economy for the realisation of the aspirations of Zimbabweans. – ZBC
